Performance and Trending Module

How are you currently keeping track of the changes you make in your IT environment? How do you know which applications are improving and which ones are still causing issues for your customers or internal teams?  What if you could rank the health of all your application stacks, applications and devices to determine where your time is best spent?

The Performance and Trending module from RISC Networks provides the monitoring and tracking analytics you need to develop strategic plans for optimizing your network.

Performance and Trending for the IT Environment

See the bigger picture.  The IT Environment view provides a summary level comparison of the performance and health of application stacks within the environment. The scores are updated daily and the user can toggle between a predefined set of historical time periods. The scope of the application stacks displayed in the view can be sliced and diced using tags.  Compare application stacks against each other to determine leaders and those that require attention.

How are application stacks performing compared to their peers?

The stack score quadrants display the relative performance over time.

The Score Trend quadrant displays the health of an application stack relative to its peers and its change over the selected time period.  In this example, the Customer Web Application stack experienced decreasing trend in its health over the past 30 days.  Accordingly, we recommend that this stack is closely watched for any additional performance impacts.

The Application Score quadrant displays the health of an application stack relative to its peers distinguished by its predominant mix of internal and external clients.  An external client is one that is found outside the specified network and an internal client is one found inside the specified network.

Performance and Trending for the Application Stack

The Application Stack view provides a comparison of the performance and health of devices within a stack.  This view highlights the issues that are most prevalent within the stack and the most impacted devices to enable the user to focus on the areas that are most critical.

How are my application stacks performing over time?

Time series graphs in four key areas are included that provide the user with historical performance.  These key areas are: Top Performing, Bottom Performing, Improving and Declining application stacks.

Performance and Trending for Device Metrics

The Device Metrics view provides a deep-dive into the performance of a device and reports on key metrics for the specified time period and on an aggregated hourly basis.  The Device Details view provides the user with a device-level lens for both inventory and performance analytics on the selected device.  Inventory analytics are displayed across the analytics banner at the top of the page.  Performance analytics are collected hourly and presented as both a time series trend and as a snapshot of performance on an hourly basis over a typical day.

Trended Device Scores

How are my devices performing over time?

All licensed devices in the selected stack are trended by score over the selected time period.

Daily Performance

The typical day chart aggregates the metric for each hour of the day for the selected time period.  Both the average and maximum values for the hour are plotted.  Selecting instances allows you to drill down to specific processors on a CPU or ports on a network interface for example.

Monthly Performance

The performance of a metric is trended in the time series graph for the selected time period.  The hourly minimum, maximum and average values are plotted across time.

What issues are occurring on each device?

A table of the issues per device is available for a detailed analysis.  The table includes details about each issue and its score on the device on which the issue was seen.

About the table fields:

  • Current device score - the most recent overall device score
  • Instance - the most granular level that issues are measured; since a device can have more than one hard drive, or other similar item, the 'instance' is the unique identifier for each of the items where an issue is measured
  • Issue - the name of the issue
  • Issue description - the description of the issue
  • Issue score - the score of the issue on the device

Performance and Trending Use Cases

Validate Cloud Performance after Migration

Are you using a different system for cloud vs. on-premises applications?  Have you confirmed that issues that existed on-premises (storage, latency, etc.) are not happening in the cloud?

Prove the ROI of your cloud migration project by tracking applications once they are in the cloud to show that you have eliminated any on-premises issues, that costs have been fully optimized, and that communication to other resources continues to function properly. Then track your applications over time to ensure that you should not make additional changes in the cloud.

Pinpoint Critical Interfaces

Your network can function better with leveraged effort on the most critical points, but when you have hundreds or thousands of devices, where do you start?  Do you have a "punch list" of places you can go to impact change on your network?

Quickly pinpoint the chokepoints in your IT environment and spend your time and energy there, not chasing ghosts.  Critical interface analysis determines what the most important networking interfaces in your environment are and evaluates those so that you don't need to wade through hundreds of alarms and potentially miss critical information.

Score and Rank your Applications

Do you have an objective measurement of your application health?  Have you ever been bitten by a dependent system that impacted your app?  Can you see all of the applications in your environment and their health?  Do you know which applications are beginning to hit their scalability limits?  Are you tracking applications for reliability, scalability, performance and optimization metrics?

Have an objective score for all of your applications over time that is based on the resources that feed the applications.  Gain the ability to  focus your team on the most critical applications and trend those applications daily for proactive maintenance.

Discover which Applications are Leading the Organization

How are your customer-facing applications performing in relation to your internal-facing applications?  Where do you have applications that you could eliminate altogether?  How do you know what the overall trends in your organization are from a reliability, scalability, performance and optimization standpoint?

Let us help you prioritize applications based on their usage patterns and trends.  Understanding which applications are accessed by customers and which are utilized by internal teams allows you to focus your efforts on your most critical, revenue-producing applications.  In addition, seeing the entire application portfolio in a single analysis provides immediately actionable information to direct your teams.
